If you want to improve your singing voice, you must realize that it is a far more involved process than memorizing lyrics or holding a tune. Most people take voice lessons to learn how to sing for the first time. Voice classes are an excellent method to get your voice, posture, breath, and other aspects of your voice assessed.

When learning to sing, there are a lot of things to keep in mind, but to get you started, here are the top 5 things to keep in mind as a beginner singer!

1. Keep Your Voice Healthy

Remember that your voice, like any other instrument, is an instrument. A singer must grasp what it means to care for the voice in order to avoid tiredness or injury, similar to how a guitarist changes his or her strings. Staying hydrated, eating well, and getting enough sleep are all good methods to take care of your voice.

From there, you’ll want to incorporate a good warmup into your practise to avoid straining your voice at the start of your singing day.

2. Get Your Breath Down

The breath is one of the most fundamental foundational parts of singing. Many beginning singers start by breathing vertically rather than horizontally, which means filling their chest with air and lifting their shoulders.

Your breath will be less effective the more air you have pushed up into your shoulder and chest region. As a vocalist, your goal is to inflate your diaphragm by breathing into it.

3. Improve Your Posture

Your body is your instrument, and if it’s slow, your sound will be sluggish as well. If you feel that your singing voice is being held back, pay attention to your posture. The more you slouch, the more difficult it is to sing. Correct posture will help to open up room in our lungs, allowing us to breathe and expand without exerting too much effort. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • To maintain your mouth loose, keep your head straight on your neck and your chin slightly down.
  • Allow your neck to streamline with your spine by keeping it straight and not craning it forward.
  • Maintain a relaxed posture by floating your shoulders into a neutral position.
  • Down at your sides, relax your arms. Don’t fidget with your garments or tighten your fists.
  • To keep your body balanced, make sure your feet are shoulder width apart.

4. Find Your Vocal Range

There are hundreds of amazing vocalists with four or five-octave vocal ranges out there. Who wouldn’t want to strike Mariah Carey’s heavenly whistle notes or Johnny Cash’s seductive low notes? Unfortunately, not everyone will be capable of doing so, which is fine.

Working with a vocal coach to determine your unique vocal range is critical so that you can keep it in mind when choosing new songs to work on or practicing on a daily basis. Of course, you should never feel restricted by your vocal type.

5. Continue to Improve by Staying Motivated

If at all possible, practice every day. Organize your singing practice so that you always get a good and productive workout. To be a good singer, you don’t have to practice for hours every day. Even a 30-minute regimen that is easy and consistent will get you where you want to go.

Make your practice sessions enjoyable as well. The key thing is to keep motivated and remember that the journey is what matters.
